Rad Hudson joined the MSRE program as a professional engineer interested in the client-facing side of the industry. Through the connections he made with Industry Instructors in the Childress Klein Center for Real Estate, Rad was able to secure a new role allowing him to play a key role in business development, permitting and design services for clients throughout the Southeast.
What is your professional background?
I’m a licensed professional engineer with more than 10 years of experience in site civil design and permitting for commercial and residential real estate projects throughout the Southeastern United States.
What led you to pursue the MSRE program at UNC Charlotte?
I was looking for a graduate program that would allow me to stand out among my peers, build business acumen and ultimately help me to take the next step in my career. I considered many different programs and when I found the MSRE program at UNC Charlotte, I knew it was the perfect fit. The program allowed me to learn about my clients’ (real estate developers) side of the business while building great, meaningful relationships with my classmates as well as the alumni and sponsor network through the Childress Klein Center for Real Estate.
What have been some of the highlights from your program experience?
I found that the most valuable aspect of the MSRE program for me was relationship building. It’s one thing to brush shoulders with someone at a networking event, but you connect with people on a much higher level when you’re in the trenches with each other grinding out that final project or comparing notes until late in the evening in preparation for an upcoming exam. I’m confident that I’ll cherish and benefit from the relationships that I have built through this program for the rest of my life.
I gained tremendous benefit from the educational experiences as well. The Childress Klein Center for Real Estate provided skills and training in all areas that commercial real estate touches. While I came into the program with a good understanding of land development design and permitting, I’m leaving with a solid foundation in real estate finance, market analysis, and economics as well as property law and land use policy.
What are your plans after graduation?
I recently accepted a new position with Bohler Engineering. The new role represents a significant step up for my career in regards to both opportunity and financial reward. I intend to maintain the relationships that I’ve built through the program in order to foster friendships as well as business opportunities as time goes by.
How has your degree helped you advance your career?
The Master of Science in Real Estate, together with my engineering experience, has given me a holistic perspective on the commercial real estate system. This perspective allows me to better understand my clients’ concerns, and in many cases, foresee issues with their projects early enough to prevent them from becoming problematic. The program also afforded me the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with many people throughout the commercial real estate industry and grow my business acumen which allows me to add tremendous value to my clients and my organization.
