UNC Charlotte, Charlotte School of Law expand dual degree programs

Thursday, July 25, 2013

UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte School of Law has partnered with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to offer several unique dual degree programs. Students now have the opportunity to earn both a Juris Doctor and a Master’s degree in real estate, accountancy, business administration or public administration in less time than if the degrees were pursued independently.

The following programs are offered as a partnership between the Charlotte School of Law and the Belk College of Business at UNC Charlotte:

J.D. and Master of Science in Real Estate

Full-time students will spend the first two years of study at Charlotte School of Law. They then spend their entire third year at UNC Charlotte, and thereafter continue to take courses at both institutions until the requirements for both degrees have been satisfied. Each school will grant nine (9) units of credit for courses taken at the other school.

J.D. and Master of Accountancy (MACC) Program (Tax Track)

Full-time students spend the first two years of study at Charlotte School of Law. They then spend their entire third year at UNC Charlotte, and complete the MACC at the end of that year, returning to Charlotte School of Law in year four for their remaining courses. Part-time students will be enrolled exclusively at Charlotte School of Law until they have completed all of the courses that comprise the first year curriculum for full-time students. These part-time students may then enroll at UNC Charlotte and begin taking courses toward the MACC. Each school will grant nine (9) units of credit for courses taken at the other school.

J.D. and Master of Business Administration (MBA)

The J.D./MBA dual degree, launched last fall, was the first collaboration between Charlotte School of Law and UNC Charlotte. Full-time students spend the first full year of study at either UNC Charlotte or the Charlotte School of Law. They will then spend their entire second or third year at the other institution. For the remainder of the program, students will take classes at both UNC Charlotte and the Charlotte School of Law. Each school will grant nine units of credit for courses taken at the other school.

Another program is offered as a partnership between Charlotte School of Law and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at UNC Charlotte.

J.D. and Master of Public Administration (MPA)

The J. D. and Master of Public Administration dual degree program is a partnership between Charlotte School of Law and UNC Charlotte’s College of Liberal Arts & Sciences and its Gerald G. Fox Master of Public Administration Program.

Unlike the joint programs with the Belk College, this 39-unit program is only open to full-time students. Students will normally complete their first two years at Charlotte School of Law, followed by the third year at UNC Charlotte. For the remainder of the program, students will take classes at both institutions until the degrees are completed.

“We are truly excited to be partnering with the Belk College of Business and the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences at UNC Charlotte,” said Charlotte School of Law President Dennis J. Stone. “These unique J.D. dual programs are part of Charlotte School of Law’s ongoing commitment to our students and the community.”

“We are pleased to have the Charlotte School of Law as a partner in creating new, innovative opportunities for students to pursue academic and career goals that bridge law and other disciplines.” said UNC Charlotte Provost Joan Lorden. “Dual degree programs offer great opportunities for students to explore the intersection of important problems and to develop leadership positions in their chosen fields ."

Prospective dual-degree program students must apply separately to both Charlotte School of Law and UNC Charlotte. Once enrolled in the dual degree programs, students pay tuition to the respective institution for each course taken at that institution.
